John married Chérie Keeler in 1989 in Wardsboro, where they live. He has two stepdaughters, Emi and Eri, both Leland and Gray Union High School and Boston University graduates and two Cairin Terriers named Four and Five.
Education and career experience: John has a Bachelor of Arts from Adelphi University in New York, graduate work in business administration from Baruch College in New York City and a Master of Public Health from UMass, Amherst. For forty years he has been a counselor of psychiatric and substance abuse clients. Prior to that, he worked in the business world as an accounts payable supervisor, bookkeeper, hotel night auditor, and assistant comptroller.
John’s community and political service: In Wardsboro he has served in a number of position, including select board member, health officer, and school board member. During four terms as representative in the Vermont House, he was vice-chair of the House Committee on General, Housing and Military Affairs, co-chair of the Working Vermonters Legislative Caucus and a member of the Labor and Economic Development Committee of the National Conference of State Legislators. Statewide, John is a committee member of the Vermont Democratic Party, a member of the Vermont Workers Center, a founding/board member of the progressive political action group Rights and Democracy, and an annual participant in the progressive State Innovation Exchange (SiX).
Award: Presented to John from the Vermont Democratic Party, the 2015 John Murphy Labor Award.
